Osteoporosis is an insidious illness characterised by a reduction in the bone mass. The bones become more porous and fragile, and are therefore more susceptible to fracture or breaking. It often manifests in wrist and femur fractures, as well as vertebral compaction that can lead to the deformation of the column, which is commonly called “bison lump“. Bone mass reaches its maximum between the ages of 30 and 35 and decreases by 1% per year after that.
